The bonds of love and affection have a remarkable way of making whatever differences in kind or kin seem all but insignificant. It's fitting then that such a lesson would be illustrated so well by a creature distinct from us — like this monkey who opened his heart to a puppy.

The rhesus macaque became the talk of the town in the city of Erode, India, after he was spotted in the urban center in the company of atiny puppy. It's not entirely clear how the wild primate came to adopt the young dog, but he nevertheless appears to regard him as his own baby.

Touched by the monkey's apparent compassion for the puppy, locals have reportedly set out food for the unlikely little family. And, sure enough, the monkey is said to share the offerings with his canine companion, making sure that the dog eats first.

Details on this relationship are regrettably few in English-language media, but according to Indian news outlet Zee News, the pair has still sparked a lot of interest from locals — and it's easy to see why:

"People who have seen them spoke of their strong mutual affection and described their bond as the most caring thing in the world — to take care of a puppy in danger and protect him like a parent. Their undying affection gives us a valuable lesson about relationships."

It seems that this arrangement may have been short-lived. Local news accounts (roughly translated from Tamil via Google Translate), appear to report that forest department officials have taken custody of the puppy. The Dodo reached out for confirmation, but our calls were not immediately returned. We will update this story if we get more information.
